Lichen Sclerosus: What It Is & How to Naturally Manage the Symptoms

We hear from quite a few customers who are trying to find ways of managing lichen sclerosus. They have found success with our wipes, pants and pads. All long term health conditions are hard to come to terms with, but when it is in an area that is hard to talk about or taboo, the barriers to feeling safe and comfortable can feel insurmountable. I am hoping that this blog can share knowledge and hopefully some reassurance.

If you are dealing with lichen sclerosus or similar, please drop me a line with your experience so we can better help.

I absolutely love these (wipes). I bought the pink design because the reason I bought them in the first place was that ordinary toilet paper was shredding my skin down below due to suffering from lichen sclerosus. These are soft and gentle and pretty and from a distance you can't really see what the pattern is.

It's a fun joke that makes me smile every time I use them. I love that I'm not in pain any more and I love that I'm using something that isn't burning up the planet's resources. Quick rinse in the sink after use, wash with usual laundry and I hang them up to dry on my octopus over the bath. Job's a goodun! Can't recommend enough. Trustpilot Review July '24

What is Lichen Sclerosus?

Lichen Sclerosus is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the genital and anal areas, leading to discoloured, thin, and fragile skin. Symptoms include itching, discomfort, pain, and sometimes tearing or bleeding of the affected skin leaving white patches. Though it affects people of all ages including children, Lichen Sclerosus is most common in postmenopausal women, likely due to hormonal changes during this life stage.

In addition to physical symptoms, the condition can have a significant emotional and psychological impact on daily life. Persistent skin irritaion and discomfort can interfere with activities like sitting, exercising, or intimacy, reducing quality of life.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to managing symptoms and minimise scarring.

If you’re experiencing symptoms, consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

What Causes Lichen Sclerosus?

While the exact cause remains unknown, many researchers believe that Lichen Sclerosus is an autoimmune condition.

Hormonal imbalances, particularly during perimenopause, menopause and post menopausal women, may also contribute to the development of Lichen Sclerosus. Declining oestrogen levels can weaken the skin, making it more susceptible to this condition.

How is Lichen Sclerosus Treated?

Lichen Sclerosus cannot be cured, but its skin reaction symptoms can often be effectively managed with treatment. The most common treatment is the use of high-potency cortico steroid creams or ointments (like dermovate), which help reduce inflammation and relieve itching.

When applied as directed, these creams can control symptoms and prevent further skin damage. However, long-term use may cause thinning of the skin, which could lead to increased irritation or sensitivity.

Other treatment options may be used as an alternative for patients who cannot tolerate steroids. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be required to address scarring or anatomical changes caused by the condition. Regular follow-ups are essential to monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed.

Natural Ways to Manage Lichen Sclerosus

In addition to medical treatments, many people find natural or non medical methods helpful for managing Lichen Sclerosus. These approaches aim to reduce irritation, protect the skin, and support overall comfort. Below are some natural management tips:

Apply a Barrier Cream or Ointment

Barrier creams - petroleum jelly (vaseline) or zinc oxide (sudocrem) - can help protect the skin and reduce friction. These creams create a protective layer over the skin, locking in moisture and soothing irritation. Always choose unscented and hypoallergenic products to avoid a reaction or triggering sensitivity.

Ditch rough toilet paper

We've all experienced the discomfort of over wiping with abrasive toilet roll, the BEST fix for lichen sclerosus is to switch to soft cotton or bamboo reusable toilet paper. You will feel fresher, they clean faster and more effectively and with less irritation.

Wear Cotton or Silk Underwear

Breathable fabrics like cotton or silk are gentle on sensitive skin and help reduce irritation caused by tight or synthetic clothing.

Avoid single use plastic sanitary products

If you still have monthly bleeding or have urinary incontinence disposable pads can chafe and cause irritation. Choose reusable period pants and pads. Look for bamboo period pants or organic cotton incontinence pants.

Wear Cloth Pads

Cotton reusable pads made from natural, soft materials are an excellent alternative to disposable pads, which often contain harsh chemicals. Many women with Lichen Sclerosus report less irritation and discomfort when switching to cloth pads.

I suffer from lichen sclerosis and recurrent thrush and Cheeky’s reusable pads are simply life changing! Thank you so much! The organic cotton reusable pads are so safe, soothing and effective I honestly can’t believe it.

No itchiness, LS flares or discomfort, and the absorption is second to none. I will never use anything else. I’m so happy too that there is nothing going into my bin at any point. Good for the environment and good for me! I love it! I’d also like to call out the fantastic, knowledgeable and personal customer services who really know what they are talking about! Use Lubricant

If you find that your vulva and vagina are dry and this causes more pain use a vaginal moisturiser.

For those experiencing discomfort during intimacy, using a natural, water-based lubricant can help reduce friction and pain. Choose products free from fragrances and harsh chemicals, which may irritate sensitive skin.

Avoid Irritants

Eliminate products that can irritate the skin, such as scented soaps, bubble baths, and laundry detergents. Instead, opt for mild, fragrance-free alternatives. An emollient is best in the bath and shower.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Some studies suggest that an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce symptoms of autoimmune conditions. While not a cure, a healthy diet supports overall well-being and may reduce flare-ups.

Lichen Sclerosus can be a challenging condition to manage, but with the right combination of medical treatments and natural approaches, many people find relief from their symptoms.
